My living room has gone through many rounds of changes since we moved in six years ago. After some recent new additions and my fall décor, I felt a fall living room tour was in order!
For a little while, we had to move out my favorite blue buffet table to make room for a toy shelf. Since our second child was born, we moved our oldest into a bigger bedroom that has room for all her toys. This gave me my old living room back! It so nice not to be drowning in piles of toys, and I love having my favorite buffet back instead of toy storage.
This season, I changed a few pieces of decor around to freshen things up. Perhaps my favorite change was to my throw pillows. I love my bohemian Turkish throw pillow covers, but I needed to swap them out to keep things fresh.
I ended up making some floral pillows from a thrifted curtain. They work for fall because of the muted tones and the hydrangeas. I was going to pair them with leopard pillows, but I loved them with the light pink Turkish throw pillows that I already had, so I decided to stick to that pairing.
In the center of the room are two light green ottomans that my mom gave me. I topped one with my favorite wooden tray to hold drinks or books. I plan to slipcover these, but for now, I like their shade of green with my new pillows.
Another new item in the room is my wooden end table. This once belonged to my beloved late Pop Pop. Originally, it was bright red with lots of water damage. I decided to give this piece a makeover.
To keep the wood but ditch the red, I used a dark gel stain to get a deep brown finish. It was my first time using gel stain, and I’m obsessed with the results!
My blue buffet is back, but the lamps are a new (to me) find. They are made of a less fragile material, which was intentional because my two kids can reach this table. I used to style this table with porcelain items and figurine lamps, but I have to stick to sturdier pieces these days. Right now, it’s styled for fall with a pumpkin topiary and dried hydrangeas.
My china cabinet is the only place I can decorate with breakable pieces. It is filled with precious pieces, including a depression glass platter from a sweet friend. These days, I like having family photos around, and most of them end up in this cabinet.
The tv area of the room hasn’t changed much, and it’s still unfinished in my mind. You may notice there are no knobs in the cabinet. This is our way of childproofing it! The piece is an odd shape that doesn’t easily fit childproof locks. I use a butter knife to open the doors… My dream is to build a built-in mantle bookshelf in this area, but we haven’t gotten around to it yet.
My rug is brand new! It’s an At Home find. We used to have a brightly colored oriental rug layered over a jute rug. The jute rug had seen better days, and I wanted a neutral rug so I could play around with the colors elsewhere in the room. The beige and black tones are perfect for the room and give me flexibility with the color palette.
In the final corner of the room, I’ve got my Grandmom’s secretary desk. It’s decorated with some pumpkins and some cloisonné vases. Putting the taper candles in the vases was my three-year-old daughter’s idea. The pink doily tablecloth used as a curtain softens this doorway, since it’s very square (and probably could stand to have an arch).
The round mirror is decked out with a dried hydrangea wreath – my favorite piece of fall decor. All I had to do was dry some hydrangeas and poke them into a grapevine wreath. It turned out stunning!
The leopard bench under the desk is another recent DIY makeover. I love this piece! I refinished the wood and reupholstered the seat with some of my favorite fabric.
