Everyone who knows me knows that I’m not afraid of decorating with color. I love using bold and bright colors in unexpected ways in my home. It’s become a part of my signature style!
I often ignore the rules when it comes to color choices. I’ll mix warm and cool tones (my living room is blue and pink), I use dark colors in small spaces, and I use bright colors as more than just accent colors.
I recently chatted with a friend who asked about how to dabble in the world of decorating with color. I gave her some tips, and then realized I would like to share them on this blog as well.
Here are some of my tips for decorating with color:

Unsure of how to add color? Pick neutral pieces for your investment items, like your couch, rug, and furniture. Bring in color with pieces that are easily replaced, like pillows, curtains, throw blankets, or accessories. This allows you to play around with very low stakes.

If you are using multiple colors, don’t clump together too many items of the same color. Each color that you use should be spread evenly throughout the room to keep things balanced. I like to examine each vignette and make sure that each color from the palette is represented in that spot.

Not sure if your colors work together? Try finding a piece with multiple colors in it, like a rug, a pillow, or an art piece, and pull colors from that item for your color scheme. This piece can serve as the anchor to ensure your colors are united.

I’ve heard people say not to mix warm and cool. But this can totally be done, and combinations like this do occur in nature. I always think of a sunset, where you’ll find blues, pinks, and oranges blended together.
But mixing colors in this way tends to be very energizing. If your vision is an energizing space, you can definitely use that color combination. If you want something soothing, you might try mixing soft pastels together instead.
So go ahead and break the rules – as long as you are aware of what effect you are going to create.
