In the past few years, there has been a renewed interest in antique and vintage china. Along with that has come a resurgence in the popularity of something known as cabbageware.
Cabbageware is a collection of plates, cups, bowls, teapots, and other serving pieces that are shaped like the vegetable from which they get their name. While it is trending right now, cabbageware has been a sought-after collectible for a long time.
While the most popular color is the classic green, it can also be found in pink, white, yellow, blue, and purple. There are many brands that produce cabbageware, with the most popular and well-known being Bordallo Pinheiro. Now that it’s back in style, you can also find reproductions at places like Hobby Lobby.
Personally, I don’t have a huge cabbageware collection, because a true cabbage piece can be on the pricier side. My obsession started with some reproduction pink cabbage plates from Hobby Lobby, shown above. I love them, and now I’m starting to crave some real pieces.

Portugal is known for producing some of the most vibrant and beautiful cabbageware in the world. In 1884, Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro opened up a ceramics factory called Caldas de Rainha. He was known for naturalist designs – especially cabbage.
In the late 19th and early 20th century the E. B. Napoli studio also designed cabbageware. In the 1960s a woman named Dodie Thayer crafted her own cabbage pieces. This potter’s work put cabbageware back on the map, especially with Hollywood celebrities.
In recent years, collecting china has become popular again. Because of this, cabbageware is having another moment. But true collectors know that cabbageware never really left – and this classic look may withstand the test of time.
Today, it’s popular to seek after classic Bordallo Pinheiro cabbageware at thrift stores, antique stores, and estate sales.
Personally, I have found it rare to come by one of these pieces thrifting, which is my primary method of shopping for antiques and vintage. I have found some green cabbage bowls in the past, which I sold in my Etsy shop. I would like to collect cabbage plates in pink, if I’m able to find any.
The easiest way to find pieces is to order them online. It’s a great way to find exactly what you want for your collection. You may also have luck at antique stores or estate sales.
Keep in mind that these popular pieces are usually priced at a premium. That is part of why I don’t have a huge collection yet. They are an investment, but for such beauty, it’s totally worth it!
While some newer pieces of cabbageware are dishwasher safe, it’s best to only do this if the label specifically tells you it’s okay. For vintage and antique pieces, handwash them in warm, soapy water to keep them in tip top shape.
Display your collection carefully to avoid chips and other damage. A china cabinet or hutch is a great place to show them off when not in use. They also make for a beautiful plate wall, but make sure that the hardware you use to hang them won’t damage them in any way.
There are a few factors that determine the value of cabbage pieces. First of all, pieces by popular makers Bordallo Pinheiro or Dodie Thayer are always more valuable.
Age and rarity also contribute to the price tag. Older, antique pieces will have a higher value. Also, unique and hard to find pieces will fetch a higher price. Finally, pay attention to the condition of the piece. Chips, cracks, and crazing can all lower the value.
If you are determining the value of a specific piece, examine the maker’s mark and look for similar pieces selling online. This can help you decide what to resell for. Or, it can simply help you determine if you are paying a fair price to add a piece to your collection.
