A beautifully decorated hutch is a great way to make a statement in your home. If you take the time to learn how to style a hutch, this is where your collections and fine china can really shine. A hutch also provides some closed storage for pieces you may not want people seeing right now.
I recently restyled my hutch to give it a fresh new look and declutter some of the accumulated mess. Some people do this seasonally.
Since I have two little kids, this tends to happen whenever I manage to squeeze it in. I’ve honestly fallen behind on my seasonal decor, which is why my hutch was looking like a hot mess before I restyled it.
Styling a hutch may feel like an overwhelming challenge! But it can actually be quite fun to do. Here are some of my favorite tips to help you style your hutch.
Where does the eye naturally rest on your particular hutch? This is where you want to create a focal point.
For me, it’s the center of the middle shelf. Here, I display my collection of Pioneer Woman cobalt goblets. They are bright and eye catching. I love that they are the first thing you see when you look at the hutch.
Your focal point could be a prized collection, a floral arrangement, or a special ginger jar. Place it in a prime location and decorate the rest of the hutch around that piece.
When I decorate, I want to keep things balanced. You can go for symmetry on a shelf to achieve this. For this round of restyling, I used a mostly symmetrical layout for my design.
But you don’t need to aim for perfect symmetry as long as things are balanced. This just means that the visual weight of an object is balanced by an equally weighted piece.
Our kitchen is small, so this piece serves as both a pretty display and storage. The closed doors hold pantry items. The bottom shelf has cookbooks. The black containers hold mail and other paperwork, hiding them from sight.
You can work your prettier kitchen items like cookbooks, glassware, and serving pieces into your display to free up cabinet space. You can also store pantry items in plain sight by placing them in beautiful storage jars, like we did with our rice.
I like to group similar objects together and display them as a collection. This can make them seem more impressive, and it’s a great way to show off an item that you’ve been gathering for a while.
Before I restyled this shelf, I had an entire top shelf filled with milk glass (above). Now my collection of blue and white is taking center stage (below).
I have a lot of small collectibles, like tiny vases for my daughter’s flowers. I like to display these pieces in front of larger pieces. It’s a great way to display them, especially if you don’t have a knick-knack shelf for small objects.
I don’t have a ton of natural elements in my display, because I’ve opted to show off my collected porcelain. But adding some nature can really add life to a display.
My eucalyptus garland frames the hutch and adds a touch of greenery. You could fill your vases with real or faux florals or greens, hang a garland like I did, or add pieces made of stone or marble to ground your display.
Change up your display occasionally to keep it fresh to your eye. Many people opt to create seasonal displays with holiday decor. I only have minimal seasonal decor, so I tend to just change up which pieces I have in my hutch.
Whether or not you’re big on seasons and holidays, change up your hutch sometimes so you don’t get bored!
