The Spiritual Power of Interior Design (Plus a Home Update)

By , May 9, 2026

Doorway covered by pink and blue curtains

This past week, my husband and I made some major design changes to the layout of our home. Our three-month-old son had the bigger bedroom, with a crib and a twin bed for me to nurse him at night. Our daughter had the smaller bedroom – one that is the size of a walk in closet.

My daughter’s toy shelf was in our living room, and at any given moment the room looked like a bomb went off. When guests came, I had to dump toys from the couch to the floor so we could sit down. The floor was always covered. It was anything but a relaxing place to be!

My son has been mostly sleeping through the night. If he wakes up, it’s one time and he just feeds and goes back to sleep. We realized we didn’t need the twin bed in his room anymore, and our daughter might benefit from a bigger room.

We decided to trade rooms and move all her toys into her room. That way the mess would be contained and our living area could be more usable.

Getting My Living Room Back

Because of her toys being in her room, I was able to bring my favorite blue buffet table back into my living room. This made me so happy – I feel like the room has its focal point back, rather than a toy shelf.

We swapped all the furniture around and reorganized everything. I spent a lot of time decorating my daughter’s new bedroom (with a butterfly theme) and making everything perfect. I also enjoyed getting my living room back to its old beautiful state.

Right now I’m sitting in my living room, just taking it all in. This is something I’ve done for years, ever since I first got into decorating. Once I’ve completed a project, I sit down that following night and admire my handiwork. I soak in all of the beauty that I’ve created and really enjoy the feeling of accomplishment.

Creativity Points Us to God

My habit of savoring my creation helps me understand God on a deeper level. We are told that he spent six days creating the earth, and on the seventh day he rested.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to believe that this rest was actually God taking in the beauty of what he made. He doesn’t tire and doesn’t need to sleep. He rested to enjoy what he had made.

I think sometimes interior design can be viewed as a frivolous pursuit. Perhaps some people view other professions as more important or vital to society. Or maybe you don’t think that having a beautiful home is that important.

But there is something truly magical that happens when our environment is beautiful. I think it’s even more so when we are the author of that beauty.

Beauty is Powerful

God created the earth to be both functional and beautiful. This is exactly what I keep in mind when I’m designing my home. Beauty is not frivolous – it is something powerful that God gave us.

When we are surrounded by beauty, it can help us feel calm, at peace, and content. I take pride in designing a home that helps my family experience these things. And I am grateful for the way that design has brought me closer to God by helping me understand him in a deeper way.

A Closer Look at Our Home

I hope you enjoyed my thoughts on design along with a few snapshots from our rearranged home. I will be sharing more in depth tours of each room on the blog and on Instagram in the future. Stay tuned!
