Craft for Toddlers: Wooden Painted Butterfly

My two-year-old daughter and I are officially in our crafting era. It all started when I let her paint some pumpkins with acrylic paint. She had such a blast and was very engaged in the process. It left me wanting to find another craft for toddlers that we could work on together!

This painted butterfly is a cute project that you can work on with your toddler. It’s a simple DIY that is pretty enough to display! You’ll treasure this precious work of art, and your child will enjoy creating it.

Craft for Toddlers: Choose a Wooden Shape

I used a wooden butterfly that I found at Dollar Tree, because my daughter’s room is butterfly themed. In fact, this is not the first butterfly DIY project that I’ve worked on for her room. We also created a butterfly shadow box.

If your child isn’t into butterflies, you can use any wooden shape that you find at Dollar Tree or a craft store. This butterfly had a little stand, which I loved, but you could also find wooden shapes that can be hung up on your wall. In the past, I’ve found wooden butterflies and other shapes at Hobby Lobby.

Craft for Toddlers: Making it Special

I started by spray painting the wooden butterfly in gold. You could use silver or even just pick a solid color that fits your color scheme. This gives a nice solid base for your child to paint on. Then all you need to do is give your child some paint in your color scheme and let them express themselves!

Supplies

• Wooden butterfly shape (or the shape of your choice)
• Spray paint
• Colored acrylic paint
• Paintbrush
• Paint tray
• Plastic tablecloth 
• Smock or apron for your child 

Directions

1. Lay your wooden shape outdoors on a plastic tablecloth. Weigh the tablecloth down so it doesn’t blow in the wind. 
2. Spray your shape to coat evenly and let dry according to directions on can. Add a second coat if needed and let dry.
3. Spread your tablecloth over your child’s work surface. Dress your child in an apron or smock to protect their clothes.
4. Squirt your colors of paint onto your paint tray, give your child the brush, and let them go crazy! 
5. Let dry according to directions on your acrylic paint.
