Home Tour: My Colorful Maximalist Living Room

The room of my home that is the most complete and that best represents my style is our living room. When we first moved in, I tried to make the living room a blend of my style and my husbands. The result was not something that brought me joy. There was a lot of grey and it wasn’t really coming together in a way that made me happy.

After a while, I gave up on trying to incorporate my husband’s style and focused on creating something that reflected me. Truthfully, my husband doesn’t care what our house looks like, as long as there is a comfortable sofa facing the tv. Once I started honing in on my style, things really came together and I am proud of the result. My husband actually really enjoys our home as well, as it reminds him of me. He always tells his friends that he lives in a very pretty house.

So without further adieu, please join me on a tour of my favorite room in our home!

My living room is very colorful, with turquoise, hot pink, and dark blue being the most prominent colors. You’ll also see pops of yellow, which I consider a neutral color in this room, as well as some beige and white.

Something that really brought this room together for me was the colorful pillows, which I purchased from an Etsy seller in Turkey. I fell in love with the bright colors and unique patterns. I’ve never seen pillows like these in anyone else’s home, which is part of why I love them so much.

The bright blue buffet table is a focal point in the room, and I absolutely adore this piece. The blue on here is my favorite color, and the paint job was inspired by a similar piece I found on Pinterest. I always think about distressing this piece for some additional texture, but so far I’ve been too nervous to try it because I’m not sure how it will turn out.

The display on my buffet table features some thrifted finds that I’m really proud of. There are French figurine lamps, which I scored for $14 for the pair at a local thrift store. I replaced the vintage shades with modern ones for a fresh look. There’s also a birdcage that I thrifted, but I can’t remember the price or where I got it from. I absolutely love the shape and color of this piece, and I like the natural element that it brings to the room. There are some faux dried hydrangeas in a pedestal vase, which I will probably replace seasonally. There’s also a gold and wood ornate tray, which was a $6 thrift store find. It holds decanters, blue taper candles, and a bowl of wine corks, which brings some texture.

The corner next to the couch features a vintage bust that I purchased from a friend who is an antiques dealer. Next to it is a family photo and a blue and white vase filled with eucalyptus, which I love the look and smell of.

Also in this corner is a framed canvas print of my husband and I at our wedding. This is my favorite shot from the day, and I love that my wedding bouquet (made by my mom) is on full display in this photo. On the shelf is a thrifted bird figurine, a pink vase, a bronze fan, and a Gold Imari ginger jar.

A wicker table, which once belonged to my Grandmom, holds some family photos and a succulent.

My china cabinet holds some of my collections. There’s some blue and white china, much of which is Blue Willow (my favorite thing to collect). There’s also some white footed vases, which I love to use for floral arrangements. This is an area that I consider incomplete. The bottom shelves are full of books, which I don’t love, but right now this is necessary because of space. Also, I don’t love the mirrored back of the cabinet. I want to either wallpaper or paint it a solid color so that the pieces inside stand out more. I think the mirror makes them get a little lost.

I have a few colorful plates on display near the ceiling. The centerpiece is a Limoges portrait plate, which is one of my favorite antique store finds of all time. The surrounding plates are from thrift stores and yard sales.

These stunning gold and black framed florals are another favorite thrift store find. I think they are mid century, but I’ve never been able to find exact dupes of them online.

This little round table was a curbside find. It’s actually very industrial looking, which does not fit my style. I disguised that by covering it with a beige tablecloth. The shelf underneath is home to a large stack of design magazines, which I have stashed all over the house.

I have a blue statement wall in my living room. On this wall you’ll find a white and gold piece that stores vases, board games, and some of our tv equipment. Above it is a collection of framed floral prints, our tv, and some gold sconces. I have big plans for this corner of the living room. I want to create a built in mantle bookcase to give some architectural interest to this room. I also want to replace the floral prints with photos of my daughter, Alexa. Finally, I want to replace the blue paint with a gorgeous wallpaper. All in due time!

The final corner of our living room is another spot that is a work in progress. I want to replace that curtain with a white and yellow tasseled curtain, to match the rest of the windows. I hung the curtain because the doorway was very square and needed softening. The black half circle cabinet is a great place to stash keys, wallets, and sunglasses. The reason that I have a pillow there is because my daughter plays with whatever I put on this bottom shelf, so I put something that would be safe for her to grab.

The top of this black cabinet changes frequently. Right now I’ve got a floral arrangement that I made from some of my late Grandmother’s faux flowers. The candlesticks were actually something that my husband picked out from a thrifting trip we took together. I loved that he was taking an interest in design, so I found a good spot for them.

I want to repaint this table hot pink. I don’t mind the black, but eventually the kitchen cabinets (which you can see to the right of this photo) are going to be black, and I don’t want everything to be so dark. Plus, I think it’s a great opportunity to bring in more color!

This mirror is one that my mom found at Hobby Lobby. It actually looked really farmhouse, and originally was made of lightly stained wood and white. I painted it gold. Now, this is another project piece. I like the gold on the ornate parts of the frame, but I think the flat part needs to be a different color. I haven’t decided what I want to do yet, but suggestions are welcome! Above the mirror is a floral piece I thrifted.

I hope you enjoyed this look at my very colorful, very maximalist living room. More often than not, the floor is covered with toys, but I stashed them in the pink ottoman for this photo shoot. Once I make some of the updates that I have planned, I’ll be sure to do another post showing you my progress.

What words would you use to describe my design style? I tend to say it’s maximalist, colorful, and traditional with a touch of bohemian. I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
